Itraconazole capsules are a widely known antifungal medication formulated to treat various yeast and fungal infections in different parts of the body, such as the lungs, throat, mouth, fingers, toenails, and vagina. Itraconazole is more lipophilic than other antifungals, which is why it is more effective in skin and nail infections.
Itraconazole belongs to the class of triazole antifungals, which cure various systemic fungal infections like histoplasmosis, aspergilliosis, and blastomycosis, primarily affecting the lungs due to weakened immunity in the body. Itraconazole capsules also help in treating skin infections, particularly ringworm, onychomycosis (nail infections), which is difficult to treat.
Fungus needs ergosterol to survive; itraconazole works by blocking its production. Ergosterol is akin to cholesterol for fungi, which keeps their walls strong; without it, the protective walls collapse and the fungus dies. Thus, Itraconazole capsules have been proven effective for yeast and fungal infections.
Itraconazole capsules may cause some side effects; seek medical attention immediately if the symptoms are severe or don’t go away. These include:
If the patient is experiencing any of these severe symptoms, it is recommended to get medical emergency help immediately.
It is best advised to take these capsules in 200 mg either during or right after a meal twice, at least for three days. However, the dosage and duration mostly depend on the type of infection. For skin or nail infections, it usually requires thirty days. If you are treating a vaginal infection, then the doctor may recommend taking it for 1 to 3 days. The dose may be suggested for months to treat severe infections.
It is important to inform your doctor about your medical history before taking these capsules. Patients who might have suffered a heart attack before, or have kidney and liver issues, should avoid taking Itraconazole capsules. Women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy must avoid it unless strictly advised by the doctor.
Those taking other medications like warfarin, omeparozole, and antacids must refrain from them.
Different types of infections show different results. It depends on the severity of the patient’s condition. For example, skin infections may take one to two weeks, whereas improvement for nail infections can be seen in months, as nails grow slowly.
For serious major infections, it may take longer, depending on the condition and the immune system.
It is best to avoid intoxicants while taking Itrazonacole, as they can affect the liver and increase the risk of side effects.
Doctors recommend:
Take it as soon as you remember
However, if it is time for your next dose, skip the missed one
Do not double doses
Itrazonacole capsules can be taken for long-duration periods, especially for treating chronic diseases like nail infections. However, it is necessary to monitor liver patients if they are on long-term therapy.
